gayle the teacher

a few days ago, gayle once again showed how she is the teacher in this whole experience, and we ‘foolish humans’ need to just take a cue and learn..

i was in the basement on her computer, while don was upstairs working on paperwork.  the basement door is always kept shut, due to the stairs.  in order to go to the basement, gayle was strapped into her ruff wear harness, and a tight hand was used to help her hop down the steps.  it was, she understood, the only way she would be allowed to go up and down the stairs….

anyway, 1 was pecking away on my keyboard and the phone rings.  i ignore it, but don answers (might be a buddy calling with a tee time).  it’s my younger brother, bruce, on the phone.  don yells down ‘pick up the phone, but i don’t hear him… so he  opens the basement door, and comes down to get me to answer the phone….bruce has something really funny to tell me, and don was standing there laughing as well…

after about five minutes of chatting, we end the call.  it was about this time, that i realize, that sitting to my left is gayle – she’s been enjoying the laughter as well!!  without the ‘human intervention’, she was easily able to climb down the stairs, and up again…much faster and more confident than when she had to drag along a human!!

so now, the door to the basement still stays closed, but when we go down, we give gayle the option to join us – she always does.  what a smartie she is!!

gayle developed a small lump in her right front wrist. biopsy determined it was a soft tissue sarcoma, with amputation feb 17, 2010. she's recovering nicely, taking naps when needed, and enjoying every moment of every wonderful day. in december 2010 we discovered oral melanoma cancer. gayle had two surgeries to remove tumors, but the ugly disease took her from us december 12, 2011. love never ends.

  1. Yay, Gayle! Our pawrents sure are silly, aren’t they? Actually, I have been doing the opposite – I make my mom carry my upstairs to bed each night. She thinks that since the stairs up to the 2nd floor aren’t carpeted that I can’t manage them. But the other day the intruder (the puppy intruder ending in ZU) was really bugging me so I ran up the stairs on my own to get away from her. Mom looked all over the house for me… took her a long time to even think of looking upstairs! Guess I won’t be getting those free rides anymore. 🙂
I bet you love being included when your mom goes downstairs now! Way to go!

  2. Jerry was our Zen master who taught us many important life lessons too. Thanks for sharing the wisdom Gayle has taught you.

Jerry also learned to slide along the wall as he hopped down the steps on his own, watch and see if you develop a nice long rub mark down the side of your staircase wall too!

  3. you know, nothing would please me more than having a nice long rub mark down the side of the staircase – we want gayle to be ‘rubbing’ for a long time yet!!!

a house is just a thing, gayle…is priceless.

  4. Yea Gayle! That’s awesome about the stairs. Our tripawds seem to be full of surprises and isn’t it great! Actually we have that long rub mark on our stairs – Mackenzie loves to rub her sides along the wall and the bannister while she goes down the stairs. I’m sure you’ll be getting your long rub mark in no time. Looks like Gayle is ready to start – watch out!

  5. Atta girl, Gayle !!
Silly humans. You’d think they could get down the stairs on their own by the time they are grown up…. geez …. have to hold onto a 3-legged dog?? 🙂

  6. Way to go Gayle! I knew you could do it all along. If your pawrents are anything like mine, I’m sure they got really excited and told you how proud they were of you. Just remember, there’s nothing you can’t do if you just put your mind to it.

  7. Hey Gayle!

Forget the stairs, I wanna hear what funny thing Bruce had to say! Bahahahahaha

You know we are proud of you! But I gotta say, I’m with Holly on this one – don’t get good or good-bye free rides!
